What Gout Actually Is

Gout happens when uric acid builds up in the blood and forms crystals inside a joint — classically the big toe, but also ankles, knees, wrists, and fingers. The result is sudden, severe pain that can wake you from sleep.

Here's the part too many people never hear: gout is one of the most controllable conditions in rheumatology. With the right diagnosis, the right daily medication, and regular monitoring, attacks can usually be prevented entirely.

From Flare to Flare-Free

Gout care has two jobs: stop the pain you're in now, and make sure it doesn't come back. The plan is straightforward — and it works.

  1. Calm the flare

A gout attack is intensely painful, but it responds quickly to the right treatment — anti-inflammatory medication, and a joint injection when one joint needs direct relief.

  2. Find your number

Gout is driven by uric acid. Lab work establishes your level and your target — drawn right in our office, with a Labcorp hub on-site for convenience.

  3. Keep it from coming back

Daily uric acid–lowering medication, checked and adjusted over time, is what actually prevents future attacks — most patients can become flare-free.
